With exercise, dietary change, smoking or alcohol use, health-promoting advice doesn’t always fall on willing ears, making these potentially frustrating areas to address. This six-week course, Lead by Dr Chris Johnstone and which attracts 10 hours of CPD credit, offers a practical training in Motivational interviewing as an evidence-based intervention shown to be helpful here.

This course involves three key elements:

1) A series of six weekly webinars, each for an hour on Tuesdays at 8pm UK time, starting on June 4th. All the webinars are recorded, so they are easy to catch later if you can’t make the live event.

2) An accompanying online resource hosting webinar recordings, additional videos, downloadable handouts, a discussion forum and other resources. Participants have long term access to this resource, making it easy to revisit course materials in the future.

3) Each webinar focuses on a specific practical element of the Motivational Interviewing process, and between each webinar, participants are encouraged to practice using the tools and techniques they’re learning.

Core Learning Outcomes

1) An increased understanding of how to support patients make health-related behaviour change, drawing upon principles and practices of motivational interviewing.

2) Practical strategies you can use in a ten-minute GP consultation to engage your patient’s enthusiasm, cultivate motivation and work with or through mixed feelings.

3) A deeper understanding of ways of to work with resistance, backed up by practical strategies you can use to build relationships with, and engage participation in, patients who initially seem less than willing.
