We are excited to announce the availability of our 'Sleep and Restore' video course for insomnia. Aimed primarily at GPs, the course was first broadcast as live webinars over 5 weeks from May 2019 and is delivered by Dr Mike Scanlan, director of Kind Minds Health and Wellbeing, with Dr Simon Wade as host.

About the Course

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) combined with CBT is known to be an effective treatment for depression and anxiety. Realising the correlation between insomnia and these psychological disorders, Dr Mike Scanlan has developed an effective high volume/low intensity group programme for insomnia. 

The cognitive model of insomnia specifies five processes that function to maintain insomnia (Harvey, 2002; Harvey, 2005). Insomnia is maintained by 5 main cognitive and linguistic processes that operate at night and during the day. These are:

  • Worry
  • Dysfunctional beliefs
  • Selective attention and monitoring
  • Counterproductive safety behaviours 
  • Misperception of sleep and daytime deficits. 

The purpose of the treatment is to reverse all five maintaining processes during both the day and the night. ACT combined with CBT works effectively with these processes.

About Dr Mike Scanlan

Dr Mike Scanlan is the Director of Kind Minds Health and Wellbeing and was responsible for setting up and designing the clinical model for the successful and award winning ‘Changing Minds’ Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) service. He has also led the development of the Northamptonshire Long Term Conditions Psychological Therapy Service. Mike is trained to use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Response prevention (EMDR), Mindfulness and Compassionate Focussed Therapy approaches. 

Mike worked as a Senior Lecturer in mental health at Northampton University and was a member of the IAPT education and training steering group. He is a member of the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. Mike regularly presents at IAPT conferences and has published widely on the topic of primary care mental health.

He has recently led the clinical development of a Court liaison Mental Health Service in Milton Keynes and worked in 2015 to design and write the service specification for an IAPT equivalent service in Qatar. Mike is the author of the widely used and well respected CBT guided self-help series of books entitled 'Moving Forward'. These books blend theories of bibliotherapy with CBT principles. The books are used in a number of IAPT services across the UK.

Mike has also delivered Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Courses with Webinars for GPs.
